Why surnames change in the 10th & 11th centuries*
- The Use of “Fitz” (Patronymics)
In the 10th and 11th centuries, hereditary surnames weren’t a thing yet. People used patronymics.
“Fitz” comes from the Norman French fils, meaning “son of.”
Walter FitzHerbert de la Mare simply means “Walter, son of Herbert, from the Marsh (de la Mare).”
William FitzWalter means “William, son of Walter.”
The name changed every generation because it was a description of who your father was, not a fixed family name. - The Shift to “Fitz Norman”
When William Fitz Norman Coombe appears around 1030, the “Fitz Norman” part likely refers to his father being a “Norman” (or perhaps his father’s name was actually Norman). This was a common way for families who settled in England during or just before the Conquest to identify their heritage. - The Transition to “de Combe” (Locative Surnames)
As the feudal system took hold, the family began using a locative surname.
